Ambedkar spent his entire life fighting for the better treatment of people.

He eventually earned a law degree and many doctoral degrees from Columbia University and London School of Economics.

When he returned home, he practiced law and went on to publish many works promoting social rights for India’s lowest class of people. 

Born in Mhow, Ambedkar was the 14^th child and youngest child born to his parents.

His mother died when he was a young child.

When his father remarried, the family moved to Bombay, which is present day Mumbai.

He was the first untouchable to attend Government High School.

Later he became one of the first untouchable students at the University of Bombay. 

He earned a degree in political science and economics in 1912 from Bombay University.

Colombia University accepted him as a post graduate student in their Political Department.

Later he attended Gray’s Inn for law and the London School of Economics and Political Science. 

By the late 1920s, he was a popular public figure.

He struggled for the rights of untouchables and led many political movements.

Some of his earliest struggles were to gain the rights to enter Hindu temples and share drinking water. 

In the 1930s and 1940s, he held many high profile positions in India where he continued to fight for the rights of the people in India.

In 1936, Ambedkar continued his political interests and founded the Independent Labour Party.

In the 1937 elections, the Independent Labour Party won 15 seats in the Central Legislative Assembly. 

He published several books and pieces of literature that talked about enhancing the life and rights of the untouchables.

In 1947, India gained its independence and Ambedkar was appointed as the nation’s first law minister. 

He was also given the task of chairing India’s first constitution committee.

The constitution was one of many steps that have led to untouchables gaining more rights in India. 

In the 1950s, Ambedkar converted to Buddhism.

He led many followers to convert to Buddhism to follow in his footsteps.

Needless to say, Ambedkar had a significant impact on human rights and the history of India.
